Compact Single-Family Home in Seattle with Sustainable Features

SHED Architecture & Design has completed the Main Street House project, a compact single-family home in Seattle, Washington. The owners, a married couple of geologists, nearing retirement, approached the architects from SHED and asked for a sustainable home that both, opens to the outdoors, yet it retains a sense of refuge. Encircled by a lush green garden, the house features a metal-clad exterior softened by wood, to provide low-maintenance.

Unlike most of the modern homes that encourage the excessive use of glass panels, this is a house that highlights the idea of privacy. That doesn’t mean, of course, that light is not important. As a matter of fact, most of the rooms feel very open and airy, even with less windows. “The primary aim of the clients was to develop spaces inside and out that engage the site and surroundings while retaining a sense of refuge. This was achieved through the arrangement of program and the composition of elements that work to focus views and extend enclosure beyond the building envelop.” Sustainable features include: heat recovery ventilation system, passive solar and ventilation, rain water detention tank and many others.
