EcoQube Desktop Aquatic Ecosystem

In our all-too-sterile modern office environments, sometimes the only other living things (besides your coworkers) are the often neglected houseplants that take up the odd corner or windowsill. And in many cubicles and office spaces, there isn’t even a tiny patch of green to help enliven the work environment. That’s too bad, because it’s been shown that having those potted plants around can have a restorative effect on our brains, which could also boost our productivity.
Taking that idea one step further, an all-in-one aquatic ecosystem compact enough to fit on a desk could be the answer that not only offers a “restorative distraction” during the day, but also lets us host a living ecosystem right in our own work space.
The EcoQube is an innovative and beautiful self-sustaining aquarium system that integrates an aquaponics filter that turns the waste from the fish into fertilizer for the plants, and includes a UV lamp for sterilizing the water and a full-spectrum LED light for boosting the growth of the plants, no matter what the light levels happen to be.
“The EcoQube’s patent pending aquaponics filter allows you to efficiently grow your house plants or micro-greens with ease, while using the same plants to keep your aquarium clean.
Fertilized water from the fish is fed to plant roots at 100 gallons per hour and the roots remove the fish waste before water re-enters the aquarium, making it a low maintenance plant propagator and easy to care for aquarium.” – EcoQube
This aquarium kit is the brainchild of Eric and Kevin, of Aqua Design Innovations, and is the product of years of aquatic ecosystem experience. They believe that their EcoQube can deliver both the concept and the beauty of aquaponics to a larger audience, and thereby show that aquaponics is the wave of the future of food and water:
“Aquaponics is a clear solution to address many issues of water and food shortages all over the world and we hope the EcoQube can help bring this incredible yet simple solution into our everyday lives and influence the way we perceive the larger issues in the world today. We know there are these horrific things happening but we’ve been so disconnected with our environment and the negative impacts we make with our everyday decisions.”
EcoQube is currently available as part of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, and backers at the $118 and up level will get their very own self-sustaining ecosystem kit that can liven up any space.
